The Social Exclusion Unit published its report ‘Mental Health and Social Exclusion’ in June 2004. The report's immediate impact is directed at improving the lives of people with mental health problems by reducing or eliminating barriers to employment and wider social participation. However it has great potential also to impact significantly across service areas, client populations and on the health, engagement and economic position of wider communities.
The National Social Inclusion Programme (NSIP) has brought together the work of government departments and other organisations in a concerted effort to challenge attitudes, to enable people to fulfil their aspirations and to significantly improve opportunities and outcomes for people with mental health problems.

The Report's Actions Points
The report sets out a 27-point action plan to bring together the work of government departments and other organisations in a concerted effort to challenge attitudes, enable people to fulfil their aspirations, and significantly improve opportunities and outcomes for this excluded group.
Action falls into six categories: |
- Stigma and discrimination - a sustained programme to challenge negative attitudes and promote awareness of people's rights;
- The role of health and social care in tackling social exclusion - implementing evidence-based practice in vocational services and enabling reintegration into the community;
- Employment - giving people with mental health problems a real chance of sustained paid work reflecting their skills and experience;
- Taking part in the local community - enabling people to lead fulfilling lives the way they choose;
- Getting the basics right - access to decent homes, financial advice and transport; and
- Making it happen - clear arrangements for leading this programme and maintaining momentum.
Following on from the report, a further publication of 12 fact sheets ‘Action on Mental Health’ was launched in October 2004 to offer practical tips to improve opportunities and outcomes for people.
The work of NSIP has been reinforced by Reaching Out: An Action Plan on Social Inclusionwhich was published in late 2006 by the Prime Ministers Strategy Unit. This report focuses on adults who are the most socially excluded and identifies actions to build and deliver evidence-based models that will improve employment and education opportunities while supporting anti-stigma employer-based programmes such as Shift. NSIP, in particular, will focus on the development of dedicated regional teams to provide further support for the implementation of good practice in employment.

About |
Sportsreporter.co.uk is a new and revolutionary web site designed to reflect the governments’ values on:
Childhood obesity, Social inclusion, Community safety, Anti racism, Anti bullying, Healthy living.
In short it is about keeping children and young adults healthy, safe and out of trouble with the police and probation service.
The site is designed to enable all schools and clubs to celebrate the children’s success on a wider scale. This is a very important feature as schools and amateur clubs are no longer getting the free coverage they did years ago from the local press, it is about giving back our children the feel-good factor within schools and local communities.
We have been asked by a number of local authorities to help them in delivering very important messages to a young audience, these messages are based around the above subjects and are crucial to the future development of children, as we don’t want them growing up feeling that they are suffering in silence.
Along with the sports theme is the idea that the website can be used as part of the school curriculum, within a number of subjects such as Literacy, Numeracy, Art, ICT and Geography. We have developed a working relationship with a large number of professional sports clubs and private businesses. These are all providing Sportsreporter.co.uk with merchandise that we are using as prizes for the children. The children can win these fantastic prizes by entering one of our many monthly competitions that are based around the national curriculum. This is to motivate more children to get involved in these subjects.
We are currently working with 10 North West local authorities who are very supportive of Sportsreporter.co.uk and are actively encouraging their schools to join the website.
